Improved Receding Horizon Fourier Analysis for Quasi-periodic Signals

    Get PDF
In this paper, an efficient short-time Fourier analysis method for the quasi-periodic signals is proposed via an optimal fixed-lag finite impulse response (FIR) smoother approach using a receding horizon scheme. In order to deal with time-varying Fourier coefficients (FCs) of quasi-periodic signals, a state space model including FCs as state variables is augmented with the variants of FCs. Through an optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother, FCs and their increments are estimated simultaneously and combined to produce final estimates. A lag size of the optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother is chosen to minimize the estimation error. Since the proposed estimation scheme carries out the correction process with the estimated variants of FCs, it is highly probable that the smaller estimation error is achieved compared with existing approaches not making use of such a process. It is shown through numerical simulation that the proposed scheme has better tracking ability for estimating time-varying FCs compared with existing ones.111Ysciescopuskc

    Visualizing Quaternion Multiplication

Quaternion rotation is a powerful tool for rotating vectors in 3-D; as a result, it has been used in various engineering fields, such as navigations, robotics, and computer graphics. However, understanding it geometrically remains challenging, because it requires visualizing 4-D spaces, which makes exploiting its physical meaning intractable. In this paper, we provide a new geometric interpretation of quaternion multiplication using a movable 3-D space model, which is useful for describing quaternion algebra in a visual way. By interpreting the axis for the scalar part of quaternion as a 1-D translation axis of 3-D vector space, we visualize quaternion multiplication and describe it as a combined effect of translation, scaling, and rotation of a 3-D vector space. We then present how quaternion rotation formulas and the derivative of quaternions can be formulated and described under the proposed approach.112sciescopu

Adaptive Torque Estimation for an IPMSM with Cross-Coupling and Parameter Variations

    Get PDF
This paper presents a new adaptive torque estimation algorithm for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) with parameter variations and cross-coupling between d- and q-axis dynamics. All cross-coupled, time-varying, or uncertain terms that are not part of the nominal flux equations are included in two equivalent mutual inductances, which are described using the equivalent d- and q-axis back electromotive forces (EMFs). The proposed algorithm estimates the equivalent d- and q-axis back EMFs in a recursive and stability-guaranteed manner, in order to compute the equivalent mutual inductances between the d- and q-axes. Then, it provides a more accurate and adaptive torque equation by adding the correction terms obtained from the computed equivalent mutual inductances. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that torque estimation errors are remarkably reduced by capturing and compensating for the inherent cross-coupling effects and parameter variations adaptively, using the proposed algorithm.111Ysciescopu

Optimal Detection Range of RFID Tag for RFID-based Positioning System Using the k-NN Algorithm

Positioning technology to track a moving object is an important and essential component of ubiquitous computing environments and applications. An RFID-based positioning system using the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm can determine the position of a moving reader from observed reference data. In this study, the optimal detection range of an RFID-based positioning system was determined on the principle that tag spacing can be derived from the detection range. It was assumed that reference tags without signal strength information are regularly distributed in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional spaces. The optimal detection range was determined, through analytical and numerical approaches, to be 125% of the tag-spacing distance in 1-dimensional space. Through numerical approaches, the range was 134% in 2-dimensional space, 143% in 3-dimensional space

Abstract. This paper suggests a real-time implementation method for software-in-theloop (SIL) simulation for control systems, primarily for control education. The SIL simulation is carried out by using a PC for the controllers, a PC for the plant, an open network, and a general-purpose computer-aided control system design (CACSD) package. Specially, Ethernet network is investigated in terms of control issues such as sampling interval, network-induced time-delay, use with many I/O points and data synchronization. Infiltration Route Analysis Using Thermal Observation Devices (TOD) and Optimization Techniques in a GIS Environment

    Get PDF
Infiltration-route analysis is a military application of geospatial information system (GIS) technology. In order to find susceptible routes, optimal-path-searching algorithms are applied to minimize the cost function, which is the summed result of detection probability. The cost function was determined according to the thermal observation device (TOD) detection probability, the viewshed analysis results, and two feature layers extracted from the vector product interim terrain data. The detection probability is computed and recorded for an individual cell (50 m × 50 m), and the optimal infiltration routes are determined with A* algorithm by minimizing the summed costs on the routes from a start point to an end point. In the present study, in order to simulate the dynamic nature of a real-world problem, one thousand cost surfaces in the GIS environment were generated with randomly located TODs and randomly selected infiltration start points. Accordingly, one thousand sets of vulnerable routes for infiltration purposes could be found, which could be accumulated and presented as an infiltration vulnerability map. This application can be further utilized for both optimal infiltration routing and surveillance network design. Indeed, dynamic simulation in the GIS environment is considered to be a powerful and practical solution for optimization problems. A similar approach can be applied to the dynamic optimal routing for civil infrastructure, which requires consideration of terrain-related constraints and cost functions

Resolver angle estimation using parameter and state estimation

    No full text
In this paper, a new type of a resolver angle estimator that utilizes a combined parameter and state estimation scheme is proposed. A state-space model of a resolver is first developed with unknown parameters. Least square estimation is employed to obtain some unknown model parameters by using the measurements up to the current time. Based on the state-space model with estimated parameters, a constrained state estimator with finite memory is constructed to estimate the resolver angle. It is shown through simulation that the proposed scheme is very effective in suppressing noise and overcoming amplitude and phase imbalances compared with common angle tracking observers.111sciescopu
